DR. MIRKIN: STATINS CAUSE DIABETES
Statins Can Cause Diabetes
Statins are the most prescribed medications in the world because they help to prevent heart attacks. However, a review of the medical literature shows that statins are associated with a nine percent increased risk of developing diabetes, and the higher the dose, the more likely they are to cause diabetes (Current Opinion in Lipidology, December 2011;22(6):460-466). For every three patients protected from a heart attack, one additional patient developed diabetes.
Since having diabetes is one of the major risk factors for suffering a heart attack, every person who takes a statin drug should follow the rules to help prevent diabetes:
AVOID:
- sugared drinks
- refined carbohydrates (if you are overweight, avoid foods made from flour)
- red meat
- being overweight
- smoking
- taking more than two drinks a day
DO:
- exercise
- eat lots of fruits and vegetables
- keep blood levels of vitamin D above 75 nmol/L (by sunlight and/or pills)
- grow large muscles.
Common statin brand names include: Advicor®, Altoprev®, Caduet®, Crestor®, Juvisync®, Lescol®, Lescol XL, Lipitor®, Livalo®, Mevacor®, Pravachol®, Simcor®, Vytorin®, Zocor®.
Dr. Pinna says:
The easiest way to prevent a statin from causing diabetes is to not take it. Only people with cholesterol over 270 should be using these dangerous drugs. And that after they reduce their caloric intake and their cholesterol intake.
