OXYGEN! YOU NEED IT FOR YOUR BRAIN!
OXYGEN! YOU NEED IT FOR YOUR BRAIN!
BEFORE READING THIS ARTICLE, TAKE A DEEP BREATH!
When this planet first got its license to operate as a Zoo there was practically no free oxygen on it. Because oxygen is needed for life forms to create high-energy bonds, no life forms existed until oxygen became sufficiently plentiful.
Then, approximately several billion years ago, life in the form of primitive bacteria appeared and began to use the energy stored in Photons and the process of photosynthesis to create high energy bonds and release free oxygen into atmosphere.
Then slowly aerobic, or oxygen using life forms, began permeating the water and soil and atmosphere of the planet.
Complicated creatures such as animals evolved and with this evolution came a more specialized use of oxygen as a source of energy.
Today, we as humans, are totally dependent on oxygen for survival. Even the slightest reduction of oxygen in our blood cells produces death to the area fed by these blood cells.
The lack of oxygen is the primary cause of common medical disasters called “Heart Attacks†and “Strokes.†Whatever group of cells, in our body, which are deprived of oxygen either become disabled or ultimately die. Just a minor reduction in the oxygen level causes the involved cells not to function properly.
FISH
We have three KOI ponds on our property.
Koi are beautiful fish of the Carp family which were domesticated by the Romans and Chinese several thousand years ago. Then, in the last two centuries, the Japanese, with their attention to detail, created incredibly beautiful Koi which were first shown to the outside world in 1914. Since that year people throughout the world have kept Koi as pets in aquariums or ponds.
The three ponds that we have are connected with a small stream and pipes and have two artificial water falls. Every morning, I first flush clean the water filter and then allow the water to fall down the water falls. Before I turn on the water falls, I examine the fish. They lie on the bottom, barely moving.
I always test the oxygen level in the water. In the morning, the oxygen level in the water is low. After I turn on the water, the water, as it falls over the falls picks up oxygen which is brought into the water in the ponds. I can determine the oxygen level by testing. As the oxygen level rises in the water, the Koi start to swim madly around the ponds. They have been given no food, only oxygen!
This fast swimming continues through the day, gradually slowing after about eight hours. When the water fall is turned off and the oxygen level falls, the activity of the Koi stops.
This is a perfect demonstration of the effect of oxygen on living cells.
THE HUMAN BRAIN
The reason the Koi swim when the oxygen level rises and they become sluggish when the oxygen level is low is because their brains are stimulated by the oxygen. The stimulated brains sends signals via the nerves to the muscles which permit the Koi to swim.
The human brain is no different, in this regard, than the Koi brain. Give the human brain oxygen and it is stimulated. Remove that oxygen and it starts to fall asleep.
If we see a patient with lung disease, we see a lethargic patient.
A very slight decrease of oxygen in the blood stream produces an instant and distinct effect on alertness and mental reactivity.
Every anesthesiologist who is caring for a patient through a surgery with general anesthesia is very much aware of the oxygen level in the blood stream. The anesthesiologist does not need to measure that level with an instrument—he can recognize instantly simply by feeling the muscle tone in the neck or by the rate of attempted breathing if the patient is not being assisted in breathing .
SMOKING AND POLLUTION
I see so many young people smoking today, that I must wonder at their lack of knowledge of oxygen.
If I mention to these youngsters holding a cigarette that smoking is unhealthy, I will get the following reply: “I’m not afraid of cancer!â€
Cancer is a far off disease for most people. There is little fear of cancer amongst the youth. But “thinking†is an activity of the present. “Thinking†is an activity that requires oxygen and just a little something extra…
As they say in Spanish.. “Para bailar La Bamba, se necesita, “Una poca de Gracia…y otra cosita…†(In order to dance La Bamba, one needs, a little Grace…and another little thing…)
THAT “LITTLE THING” IS “OXYGEN” TAKE A DEEP BREATH! HOW DO YOU FEEL?
