PAUL, THE PSYCHIC OCTOPUS

A friend of mine has developed a concern about PAUL, the Psychic Octopus in Germany who picked eight of eight world cup matches correctly — including Germany’s loss.

My friend calculated the odds of that happening by chance and they came to 0.39% or less than 4 chances in a thousand!

My friend wondered — Did I have any ideas? Strangely enough, I do.

MENTAL TELEPATHY

There is an area in life designated by scientists as: MENTAL TELEPATHY.

We have all experienced that weird event of thinking about another person whom we haven’t seen for a while and suddenly have them call by telephone or write an email at the moment we have them in our thoughts. When we ask them why they called, their answer generally is: “I don’t know. I suddenly wanted to call you.”

Did our thoughts stir up their thoughts and cause them to think of us? Did a wave, which travels at the speed of light, that is, almost instantly, travel from our mind to their mind?

Why not?

QUANTUM THEORY

We live in a universe whose foundation is essentially unknown to the average person.

Most of us rely on people called Scientists, to give us a reasonable explanation of what the universe actually is. We believe that Scientists are intelligent, honest, and spend their lives, like monks or holy people, studying the foundations of everything in the universe.

If a group of scientists tell us something about some aspect of life or of the universe, we believe it — almost. Deep down, we all know, that NO-ONE knows anything completely! Every human is a skeptic at heart!

We all know that no-one knows everything. We know that scientists, even the greatest, such as Newton and Einstein, could not explain everything.

On a daily basis, we go to sleep and dream, and no scientist in the world can explain a simple dream. How does a dream seem so real? What does it mean?

There are thousands of unanswered questions about our life and our universe that are not and never will be answered. When we look at the Universe, we think that it is real.

The reality of the Universe is locked in the explanation of Physics. Physics is the study of space, matter and energy. Einstein has given the best explanation, so far, of the physics of the Cosmic or Total Universe. But, he never could explain the Microscopic Universe.

The Universe of sub-atomic particles. That part of the Universe is studied by scientists in an area of study called: QUANTUM MECHANICS. The study of Quantum Mechanics requires the use of very specialized mathematics.

Those physicists who have studied quantum mechanics, tell us that the sub-atomic particles consist of smaller particles and that all particles appear to be composed of waves. Most people who have studied this area, remember the experiment of a particle going through a hole and re-appearing as a wave.

There seems to be a duality in nature: a particle/wave combination. At this very moment, in the mountains of Switzerland, we are witnessing a group of atomic physicists smashing sub-atomic particles, hoping to find a particle that is the foundation of matter. (Some people think that this group may create Black Holes that could conceivably destroy the Earth!)

SPACE, TIME, ENERGY

Human experience with the Universe has boiled itself down into three fundamental areas:

Space, where matter exists, Time, a strange dimension that gives us Conscious Experience, (the experience which things move) and Energy (an explanation of why things move.)

TIME, SPACE and ENERGY have all acceptable explanations, according to modern scientists. (Any Spiritual element does not exist, according to scientists, because a spiritual element cannot be proved; and yet, neither can can we completely prove that time, space and energy exist!)

When we examine the three fundamental concepts of what the Universe consists, we find that the three elements: Space, Time and Matter are irrevocably interrelated.

EINSTEIN’S FAMOUS FORMULA E=MC2 SAYS IT ALL. ENERGY=MASS (SPACE) TIMES THE VELOCITY OF LIGHT (TIME) SQUARED (BECAUSE OF THE THREE DIMENSIONS OF SPACE, ENERGY DISSIPATES AT A RATE THAT IS THE SQUARE OF THE DISTANCE FROM THE SOURCE).

This is not an easy formula to understand, but it has withstood a century of analysis, by millions of trained physicists, and no one has found a better description for energy, mass and time.

TIME

You and I, and all living creatures are locked into the dimension of Time. Our minds are totally controlled by our memories, which give us a sensation of movement (See my article: Movement is Memory). We are compelled to think that there is a Past, a Present and we believe there will be a Future, because there always has been one.

In the Study of Philosophy, there is a School of thinkers who believe in a Concept called: IDEALISM.

Idealists believe that all experience is a dream. The Idealists do not believe that a physical world, with Energy, Mass and Time, is real. They believe that all events are dreams, either of the dreamer, or of a Super-Dreamer which might be called God.

If you are not versed in Philosophy, you will be surprised to learn that idealism goes back to the Early Greeks, including Plato, and has been a recurring philosophical explanation of reality to the present day.

Thus, I am not alone, nor even close to the first writer, to mention that all our experience is unreal and fictitious. There are many superb thinkers who believe that the world is nothing but thought.

Yet, if we are interested in exploring the Dream of the Universe, apart from Motion and Energy, we have to explore Time. The reason for the importance of TIME is the fact that ENERGY is simply a change of Spatial-Mass or Matter in the Dimension of Time.

If we go back to Einstein’s equation: E=MC2, we see clearly that E (Energy) is the location of Space multiplied by a velocity, “C” The Speed of Light, squared. Mass-energy equivalence: E = mc², energy and mass are equivalent and transmutable (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theory_of_relativity)

But, a velocity is simply space multiplied by time. The Space component is a man made description of a location. A meter, a kilometer or an inch and a mile, are definitions of how we, as a group of living beings, describe what we see.

In the Metric System we had an actual metallic bar, ensconced in a chamber in Paris as evidence of what we mean by One Meter. This became an in-exact measurement and was changed to length of one wave of light!

I have copied this simply to make the reader understand the humans have to make a tremendous effort to prove the reality they believe in really exists. If you examine the definition of a metre you see that it is a TAUTOLOGICAL (defining by using the original definition) (repetition of same sense in different words) definition   and really means NOTHING!

What we are learning about Space is that it is what We say it is.

What about Time? Steven Hawking, probably the most brilliant living physicist wrote a book called A Brief History of Time. This book does not explain Time, but rather, explains a few of the theories that have emanated from Quantum Mechanics.

However, it gives the reader a clue of what Time is: Time is Change. The Universe, from the human perspective, is ever changing. We note that the Physical or non-Living Universe is becoming less organized. And, That the Living Universe is becoming more organized.

This pattern of change indicates the Past and the Future. If a Stone, or a Sedimentary Rock Formation crumbles, and you remember it organized, and it is now disorganized, the Organized scene is the past and the disorganized scene is the present – or even the Future.

DOES ALL TIME EXIST SIMULTANEOUSLY?

If The Past, The Present and The Future all existed in one framework, a non-physical; that is, a Spiritual Being could browse though all segments and see what happens in any of the segments.

This is difficult, but not impossible, to imagine. We can, as a matter of fact, imagine a Fourth Dimension of Time which rides above The Past, The Present and The Future.

We can, if we are friends of Paul the Octopus, call this domain: Paul Time. In Paul Time, Paul can see The Past, The Present and The Future as they really exist. If someone would give Paul a nice, delicious Mussel for telling them what he saw in the Future Domain, Paul would do so.

Why not?

CAN ANY CREATURE SEE THE THREE DOMAINS OF TIME?

Nobody can possibly deny that there are three Domains of Time. We have very little evidence that humans can see the future. On the other hand, outside of our experience with Paul, we have done very few experiments with other living creatures. We should do so.

We might be surprised to find that other living creatures can ignore our concept of time that compels us to believe that the future is invisible. It is visible, if your mind is not tied down by your beliefs.
