“Vendetta” is an Italian word which means a continuing feud or family fight which goes on for generations.
Here is the historical genesis for the term (From Wikipedia):
“Vendetta is common in societies with a weak rule of law (or where the state doesn’t consider itself responsible for mediating this kind of dispute) where family and kinship ties are the main source of authority. An entire family is considered responsible for whatever one of them has done.
The practice has mostly disappeared with more centralized societies where law enforcement and criminal law take responsibility of punishing lawbreakers.
In ancient Homeric Greece, the practice of personal vengeance against wrongdoers was considered natural and customary: “Embedded in the Greek morality of retaliation is the right of vendetta . . . Vendetta is a war, just as war is an indefinite series of vendettas; and such acts of vengeance are sanctioned by the gods”.
In the ancient Hebraic context, it was considered the duty of the individual and family to avenge evil on behalf of God.
The executor of the law of blood-revenge who personally put the initial aggressive killer to death was given a special designation: go’el haddam, the blood-avenger or blood-redeemer (Book of Numbers 35: 19, etc.).
As the Oxford Companion to the Bible states: “Since life was viewed as sacred (Genesis 9.6), no amount of blood money could be given as recompense for the loss of the life of an innocent person; it had to be ‘life for life’ ” (Exodus 21.23; Deuteronomy 19.21)”
VENDETTA IN THE 21ST CENTURY
The only war of any significance on the planet today is occurring in Afghanistan.
In this primitive country, tribesmen armed with old AK-47 (Kalashnikov) rifles, left there by defeated Russian troops, are battling a modern army, equipped with fighter planes and bombers, and all the regalia of homicide, that has been invented and produced by the large Military-Industrial Complex of Europe and the U.S.A.
Recently, these tribesmen shot down a large American helicopter with the loss of over 30 lives. Within days, the U.S. Department of Defense came out with a “Vendetta” style cry of success:
Airstrike Kills Taliban Militants Who Shot Down Helicopter
“The commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan says an airstrike has killed the militants responsible for last week’s helicopter crash that killed 38 Americans and Afghans.
Insurgents shot down the Chinook helicopter in the central Afghan province of Wardak on Saturday.”
The “insurgents” were men who were born and bred in Afghanistan. Afghanistan is their home and their nation! Against whom were they insurrecting?
Like the economy of the U.S.A. and Europe, there is a complete disconnect in the minds of the leaders of the West with the present and the past.
Maintaining a war in a primitive country with values that are anachronistic and maintaining an economy with the same “Cave Dwelling” mentality of the 19th Century will not solve the problems of the 21st Century.
Either the leadership of the West changes or the people of the West will pay a horrible price.
