Talk about Oxytocin is reaching a high pitch. You can hear discussions about Oxytocin on the radio, on television shows, read about it in the newspapers or on the Internet. People are even demanding that pills be made of Oxytocin which could be used to alter behavior, and perhaps even stop warfare.

WHAT IS OXYTOCIN?

Oxytocin is a hormone produced in the Pituitary Gland. It is found in all animals. Its major effect is to cause the uterus to contract during delivery of the baby.

Doctors have been using Oxytocin to help deliver babies since the 1950’s. The trade name is “Pitocin” and the expression “I’m going to have to “Pit” her” could be heard routinely in delivery rooms. Injecting Oxytocin into a vein would have a rapid effect. The uterus would contract and the baby would come out.

The effect was very specific, but there were many side effects. And these side effects could be deadly!

Since Oxytocin caused muscular contractions it also caused caused muscular contractions of the arteries. Blood pressure could shoot so high that a hemorrhage of the brain could result.

The well being of the baby had to be monitored intensely. Anything in the blood stream that affected the mother affected the baby since they shared the same blood.

OTHER EFFECTS

Although uterine contraction is the primary effect of Oxytocin there are many other effects, all associated with delivering and caring for babies. Remember, when a baby is born it needs a mother with all her caring desires.

MATERNAL EFFECT

The “Mother Instinct” is not an instinct, it is a result of Oxytocin. Without Oxytocin females of any specie are not interested.

Female sheep given Oxytocin display maternal behavior even for babies that are not theirs.

ORGASM

The orgasm of both men and women are affected by Oxytocin levels. This effect is greatest in women. Women often complain to their doctors that they have difficulty achieving orgasm.

All sorts of remedies have been tried, but none universally successful. The men involved frequently believe they are at fault and this can produce depression in both parties.

Now we are beginning to see that the real culprit may be the level of Oxytocin.

TRUST AND FRIENDSHIP

Most people believe that their ability to measure the trust-worthiness of others is a result of their intelligence and their experience.

It is being discovered that friendliness and trust in others is more a manifestation of Oxytocin levels than the experienced mind. Up the Oxytocin levels and you automatically become more friendly.

I am not sure that this is a good thing? But, young people taking Ecstasy pills which raises Oxytocin levels show increased trust in one another.

REDUCING FEAR

Higher levels of Oxytocin are associated with lower manifestations of fear. This, of course, is the same mechanism as increasing trust.

The army is thinking of giving soldiers Oxytocin pills so that they will have no fear of the enemy. Their main concern is that if a soldier takes too many pills he may trust the enemy and then: Goodbye!

MEMORY LOSS

There is some evidence that Memory Loss occurs when Oxytocin hits high levels in the blood stream. This may be one of the reasons why we trust others and have no fear of them If we cannot remember painful events we become like children and trust everyone.
